A tribute to the Spirit of Clark "Clarksan" Nelson

 

 When learning of Clark's passing of the morning of Nov 20,2021 this song came to mind while he was a great spirit on this earth for 83 years to a great spirit in the sky forever. He will be sorely missed by friends and family. Clark's contributions to this 623rd ACW website are highlighted below. May his loving spirits be with him.

Clark Nelson Remembering Roommate Gaylon Lackey - Naha ADCC 1957

I took the attached photo of my Naha Air Base roommate Gaylon Lackey in August of 1957 when we spent the day at Yaetake aka: ‘Radar Hill’. Lackey can be seen on the right near the guard at the gate.

Yaetake at that time was a member of the 624th AC&W, with call sign ‘Foolhardy’. They passed along their air traffic to we, the Air Defense Control Center (ADCC) at Naha Air Base; our call sign having been ‘Slowpoke’.

Gaylon Lackey passed away January 25, 2000.

Below photos were taken while Basil was attending B17 tour.  From the 1990s at CAK (Canton/Akron airport) when the B-17 ‘Aluminum Overcast” was on tour.

Basil also served with the 637th AC&W Squadron at Othello, Washington, as well as the radar site at Yaak, Montana.

Face Mask For Safer Shopping

Here is a simple face mask that I fashioned out of a bounty paper towel.

1 Fold it into a triangle

2 Use your fingernail to form a slit opening at the corners

3  Slide rubber band thru the slit and make a slip knot with the band. Slip one end of band into the other end and pull. 

Actually you don't need a slit at the corners. A tightened slip knot around the corners should be sufficient.


I use this when going shopping. A lot of people are wearing masks. So should you.

Try it you'll like it. You'll look like a bandit. :-)


Optional: Fold below chin excess and secure with paper clip (see results below)

Norman Lee Ward, 81, a 623rd AC&W veteran, died Thursday, December 27, 2018. Norman was a victim of Polio during his early years, yet was strong enough to endure and overcome the frustrations common to those stricken with Poliomyelitis.

Norman served his country well as a member of the United States Air Force, having served as a member of the 313th Air Division, Detachment 1, Crew ‘D’ at the Air Defense Control Center at Naha Air Base Okinawa; moreover, also as a member of the 623rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron.

Norman opted for a reassignment to an island member within the Sakishima Archipelago, Miyako Retto; the island of Miyako Jima. Earthquakes and typhoons are quite common to Miyako Jima, with some of the most devastating having occurred during Norman’s tour of duty. Norman would later spend a career at a steel plant; would design and build his own home.
